Beyond the Résumé for U.S. and Canada Companies: Why Great Hiring Starts Where the Résumé Ends

A guide for companies across the United States, Canada, and the UK building high-performing teams in 2026

Why Hiring Great People Has Never Been Harder

Hiring teams across the United States, Canada, and the UK are facing a paradox.

Companies have access to a larger, more sophisticated talent market than ever before. At the same time, the skills they need are changing rapidly  and AI is making it increasingly difficult to tell polished presentation apart from proven capability.

Finding candidates has never been easier. Knowing who can actually perform the job is becoming the real challenge.

What companies need from talent is changing faster than traditional credentials can reflect.

AI has dramatically lowered the effort required to apply for a job. Generative AI lets candidates apply at scale while tailoring résumés and applications to each individual position. For employers across North America (U.S.) and the UK, that means one thing:

More applicants ≠ more certainty.

None of this means AI-assisted candidates are bad candidates, and it doesn't mean résumés have lost their value. It means the hiring environment has changed.

When presentation becomes easier to perfect, validation becomes more important.

The Résumé Is an Introduction — Not a Decision

A résumé gives hiring managers an efficient way to understand a candidate's experience, career progression, education, and exposure to relevant tools or industries. That's valuable information.

But great hiring requires answering a different question: Can this person actually perform at the level this role requires?

Increasingly, leading organizations in the U.S., Canada, and the UK are looking beyond credentials and putting greater emphasis on direct skills validation.

The future isn't résumé OR skills. It's résumé AND skills.

93% of talent acquisition professionals say accurately assessing a candidate's skills is crucial to improving quality of hire.

The résumé should help answer: “Should we learn more about this person?”

It should rarely answer: “Should we hire this person?”
